Yes, you can fit a room temp sensor to an older D2 airtronic heater and keep the existing rotary reostst control. Please follow link below

Please see attached diagrams to show electrical connection. You may require possibly to locate the grey cable, sometimes it is not included with the other wires at your existing controller, in which case you may need to locate it at the heater unit and run a new cable
