When does a boat need a Galvanic Isolator?

A boat needs galvanic isolation when two dissimilar metals are in contact with each other in the presence of an electrolyte (such as water) and an electrical current flows between them. This can lead to accelerated corrosion and damage to metal components of the boat.

When you connect your boat to shore power there is the possibility of a difference in voltage between your boat and the onshore supply. This difference can lead to galvanic currents and subsequent corrosion of your vessel, particularly the hull where it is connecting with water. Galvanic isolation protects your boat from these currents, and removes the risk of galvanic corrosion.
